On 23rd March last month when Labor MP Simon Danczuk choose to raise Pakistani flag in Rochdale in respect of the Pakistani community; unexpectedly an immediate argument followed after the reality TV star Katie Hopkins associated the Pakistani flag with the sexual abuse of minors in a series of Twitter messages.
Katie Hopkins claimed that it is outrageous to raise the Pakistani flag in Rochdale when in 2012, nine men from the Lancashire town, eight of whom were of Pakistani origin, were jailed for their part in a child sexual exploitation ring.
The flag was raised over Rochdale town hall for less than half an hour, according to Danczuk’s aide. Afterwards, the MP posted a photo of himself on Twitter with two men of Pakistani origin at the ceremony.
This infuriated Hopkins to the point where she replied with a photograph of eight of the men convicted for offences connected to child exploitation. Above the image, she wrote: “Are these your friends too @SimonDanczuk? Is this why you are raising the Pakistani flag in Rochdale? 77 years inside”, (68 years since independence to be precise Ms. Hopkins).
Another post, which Danczuk has reported to the police, said: “Your Pakistani friends saw young white girls as fair game when they abused them. Do NOT lecture others on community cohesion fool.”
For the time being Danczuk has chosen to take the matter to court though he has also reportedly received threats from the more racist corners of the British society.
However what so ever is the outcome of this, it is clear from this case that even though Britain today is a highly multi-ethnic society yet the voices of racism and white man supremacy are yet to die down!
But it also highlights that even today Britain has lost little of its moral conscience as men like Simon Danczuk continue to stand up for the rights of the minorities.
Nevertheless as for our dear Ms. Hopkins I want to highlight two main facts for her because either she is a little too judgmental or simply too racist to see sense!
Fact 1: One in every five American women suffer from sexual violence in their lives. Does this mean all American men are rapists Ms. Hopkins?
No and same is the case with Pakistan and just so that she can get her facts straight, the fact is there is significantly less rape crime in Pakistan than even US and much, much lower than India whose capital Delhi has just been named as the rape capital of the world.
Just because eight Pakistani men were involved in a dastardly crime does not mean that the rest of the eighty million Pakistani men too should be condemned.
Fact 2: During the colonial era thousands of British were involved in the most horrid of crimes including rape, murder and large scale looting of global resources from poor countries. Does this mean all British men are criminals, no? In fact Simon Danczuk , the man you abuse so openly is an example of the high moral conscience that the British society possesses.
What’s important is that even a victim’s father has come out to condemn Hopkin’s claim of equating rape with the Pakistani identity. One can only hope that people like Ms. Hopkins can see sense and not destroy the global peaceful co-existence in a global village that we have achieved after so long a struggle; and that too due to her online bickering.
