Yukagir tribe members discovered 9,300-year-old bison mummy in Siberia with all its organs and even some fur. Details of the anatomy of the animal, which was discovered in 2011, were presented recently at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology’s annual meeting in Berlin.
“The exceptionally good preservation of the Yukagir bison mummy allows direct anatomical comparisons with modern species of bison and cattle, as well as with extinct species of bison that were gone at the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary,” Evgeny Maschenko, a researcher at the Paleontological Institute in Moscow and a member of the team that’s studying the mummy, said in a written statement.

The name of the Yukagir bison is a steppe bison or priscus, which became extinct after the Ice Age.
Researchers hadn’t yet determined what killed the bison but said the lack of abdominal fat suggests the animal died from starvation.
