Pakistan Is Digging Mass Graves For Heat Wave Victims

Karachi: Taking a lesson from last year’s space crunch, a city in Pakistan has prepared itself to bury dead bodies if the country continues to be in the grip of an intense heat wave this year also. Gravedigger has been hired to prepare the graves to avoid inconvenience faced last years. More than 1,300 people died due to the intense heat wave in the country last year.Pakistani grave digger Shahid Baloch excavated three elongated trenches big enough for 300 bodies in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi.

“Thanks to God, we are better prepared this year,” said Mr Baloch, 28, who works with three brothers at the vast Karachi cemetery run by the charitable organization Edhi Foundation.

Drug addicts, day laborers and the elderly were the biggest victims of the searing heat IN Pakistan last year.

However, the meteorological department in Pakistan has not predicted a repeat of last year’s extreme conditions in Pakistan.

At least 200 first-response centers have been set up across the city to tackle the situation.

The problem last year was compounded by power cuts that left people unable to cool themselves with fans and air conditioners, particularly affecting those unable to afford generators.
